Note the demand for interest payments after world war 1 drove britain and france to extract maximum war reparations from germany, a fundamental cause of ww2. after ww2, again, the US used interest payment as financial pressure to force britain to demolish what's the left of its empire. the US is very experienced to destroy its "allies" through debt peonage. it is happening again.

Warwick is right that both the US and europe have their own agenda to finalize the deal. I am not sure europe will indeed lock in the US by fully capitulating and giving up its sovereignty - I have a suspicion appeasement doesn't work with the hegemon. on the other hand, Trump surely gets to put up a victory lap to his constituents with the added satisfaction of humiliating europe in public.
entrapment is the most obvious pitfall of any alliance - the weaker party always wants to ride the coattail of the strong and the strong may be manipulated to do the weaker's bidding that goes against its own interests. I doubt such an obvious ploy can escape notice of US planners and a transactional trump. trump is hardly a master at deals but von de leyen is a green rookie at best.

He's right in that the top-line figures Trump ascribed to the deal are wildly unrealistic - and so in a material sense the financial concessions by EU are far smaller.
However as to the power dynamic, in particular the choice to eat the 15% tariffs without retaliation to which EU is entitled, it's pure humiliation for Brussels. In reality they had substantial leverage simply because the US has already alienated so many other trade partners. Business leaders will see the writing on the wall, and it'll accelarate US corporates eating their EU counterparts' lunch.

EU was given a choice: either accept vassalage to USA or USA would arrange provocations against Russia that would lead Russia to nuke Poland and Germany and perhaps other EU states. This would trigger NATO article 5, which requires all NATO members to cooperate in defending other members of the alliance. USA cooperation would consist in issuing a very stern diplomatic protest and selling some non-nuclear weapons to Germany and Poland to allow them to defend better against further attacks. Not a good outcome for EU, in other words.
Russia and China also prefer EU to be USA vassal than for USA to provoke Russia to use nukes on non-nuclear EU states.
EU was doomed to USA vassalage when it failed to develop its defense industry to parity with USA after WWII. But it couldn't do this because it faced the same dilemma then as now. USA always had the option of provoking war with USSR/Russia that would leave western Europe /EU in ruins, if western Europe/EU dared to challenge USA.
you are right europe is a hostage for the US and subject to blackmails by its master - hence Kissinger's warning about "being US ally is fatal". It is used as a giant buffer zone between US and Russia - even the zone to absorb nuclear attacks. No one should be surprised about US intentions, which are at least logical if perverse. I think China actually wants europe to be an independent pillar in the multipolar system as it is still a large economic player and an old civilization. I suspect Russia would love to see a more sovereign europe as well for trade and commerce. As I wrote, EU knows what USA is capable of doing (making EU a battleground and so left in ruins like Ukraine) and thus EU is desperately trying to appease USA. The reason EU barks at Russia is to signal submission to USA. The reason EU re-arms but does so very slowly is because EU knows USA will eventually arrange war between EU and Russia, and the weaker EU is when war starts, the more likely this war will be pure performance, with minimal casualties and economic damage, rather than real war. For example, USA may force EU to attack Russia and kill a few Russian soldiers, then Russia will be allowed to invade 1km into EU and kill a few EU soldiers, then Russia will retreat so USA can declare victory.
USA talk of pivoting to Asia is pure talk. USA knows perfectly well that Asia will be completely lost to China (and India and Russia). USA is instead focusing on those parts of the world where it can maintain control: the impregnable North American fortress, EU, Arabian peninsula and North African oil resources close to EU, as much of South America and sub-Saharan Africa as possible.
North American vassals (Canada each Mexico) and EU are USA most important vassals and hence will be shown no mercy if they show insubordination while USA empire is feeling threatened by its impending loss of Asia. EU knows this and is responding accordingly.

I hold the same view that most western leaders these days are essentially agents working for the US/jewish deep state, including the figure heads running the US (at both ends of the political spectrum from Obama to Trump).
